Grade Overview
A workhorse cast aluminium bronze used for bushings, nuts, worm wheels, valve bodies and pipe fittings. Aluminium provides solid-solution strengthening while iron refines the grain and forms hard particles, so strength, hardness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance are far above those of ordinary tin bronze: sand-cast tensile strength is at least 490 MPa, elongation at least 13% and hardness about 110 HBW in chill castings, and the alloy is weldable. The weak points are poor brazing, only fair machining, and a tendency for large castings to embrittle if cooling is uncontrolled and brittle phases precipitate. Specify it for pressure-containing parts needing high strength, wear resistance and corrosion resistance; control cooling rate and aluminium content during casting, avoid slow cooling in thick walls, and allow for its different thermal expansion and conductivity when mating with steel. Machining is best done with sharp tooling and controlled feeds, and castings should be inspected for the brittle phase that forms when a section cools too slowly.
