Grade Overview
A cast aluminium bronze based on ZCuAl10Fe3 with manganese added, used for bushings, worm wheels, valve bodies and wear parts. Manganese strengthens further in solid solution and raises hardness, so strength, hardness and wear resistance all exceed the 10-3 grade while corrosion resistance remains good: chill-cast tensile strength is at least 540 MPa with elongation of at least 20% and hardness of at least 120 HBW. The penalty is slightly lower ductility than ZCuAl10Fe3 and a greater tendency to brittleness, and brazing is again poor. Use it where strength and wear resistance requirements are higher while corrosion resistance still matters. If aluminium and manganese are both near the top of their ranges, take particular care against slow-cooling embrittlement, cool thick walls faster or compensate in the process, and allow for the difference in thermal expansion when it works against steel. It is a useful middle step between the simple 10-3 bronze and the nickel-bearing grades, adding hardness and wear life without the cost of nickel.
