Typical Applications
Grade Overview
The 8-13-3 aluminium bronze with about 2% nickel added, used for propellers, high-pressure valve bodies, pump bodies, worm wheels and bushings. Nickel raises corrosion resistance and corrosion-fatigue strength while refining the structure and improving density and pressure tightness, so high strength is combined with better toughness: chill-cast tensile strength is at least 670 MPa with elongation of at least 18%, and hardness at least 170 HBW. Against ordinary aluminium bronzes it costs more, is still difficult to braze and is only average to machine. Specify it for marine and high-pressure pump and valve castings that need high corrosion resistance, high strength and resistance to alternating loads; watch composition uniformity and heat treatment in production, and avoid direct contact with dissimilar metals in aggressive corrosive environments. Because it is often specified for propellers and high-pressure pump parts, casting quality and metallurgical consistency should be verified rather than assumed, and machining allowances need to be planned early.
