Grade Overview
A high-lead tin bronze with the lead present as a dispersed free phase, a long-standing material for heavily loaded sliding bearings, bimetal bearing shells, roll-neck bearings and piston-pin bushings. The free lead supplies lubrication and embeddability: it can accommodate hard particles, absorb shock and tolerate short periods of boundary lubrication, and fatigue resistance is outstanding. Chill-cast tensile strength is at least 220 MPa with about 70 HBW; sand castings give roughly 180 MPa and 65 HBW. The penalty is low strength and hardness, hence limited load capacity, together with the high lead content that restricts use in drinking water, food-contact and high-temperature duties, where strength also falls off markedly. Use it for heavily loaded bearings at moderate speed and temperature, normally as a thin bimetal lining, and avoid long service at elevated temperature. Bonding it to a steel backing keeps the lining thin enough for the load to be carried by the steel, and the pouring process must control cooling and bond quality so the lining does not separate.
