Grade Overview
A lead bronze with a higher lead content than the 10-10 grade, used for heavy-duty bearing shells, rolling-mill bearings, vehicle bearings and bushings, especially at low speed with heavy load and some shock. The larger lead fraction improves sliding behaviour, shock absorption and embeddability beyond the 10-10 grade, so the alloy conforms better to the shaft journal and tolerates brief oil starvation; sand-cast tensile strength is about 170 MPa with elongation of at least 5%. The trade-off is a further fall in strength and hardness, roughly 200 MPa and 65 HBW in chill castings, and weaker fatigue resistance, plus stronger restrictions on lead. Specify it for rolling-mill and vehicle bearing shells, normally cast as a bimetal layer, keep service temperature and speed moderate, and verify the compliance position for leaded material before release. The lead level also drives a density difference that segregation can exploit, so the melt must be stirred thoroughly before pouring, and the journal hardness has to be matched to the soft lining.
