Grade Overview
Chill- and sand-cast tin bronze with about 10% tin and 0.8-1.1% phosphorus, used for bearing shells, bushings, worm wheels, gears and connecting-rod ends where steady pressure and wear resistance are both required. Phosphorus acts first as a strong deoxidiser during melting; the residual phosphorus forms a dispersed hard phase, so hardness, low friction and anti-seizure behaviour are the best of the tin bronzes, with a chill-cast tensile strength of at least 310 MPa and hardness of at least 90 HBW. The cost is low ductility and impact toughness: elongation is only about 2% in chill castings and roughly 3% in sand castings, so the alloy is sensitive to shock and off-centre loading. Specify it for steadily loaded, moderate-speed sliding parts and keep it away from heavy impact. Control phosphorus addition and burn-off during melting, feed thick sections properly, and avoid brittle cracking during casting. Sand castings still reach about 220 MPa with at least 80 HBW, but the low elongation leaves little margin, so treat it as a wear-grade bronze rather than a structural one.
