Grade Overview
A multi-element cast tin bronze with low tin and high zinc and lead, used for valves, pipe fittings, pump parts and other corrosion-resistant castings. The low tin is offset by high zinc and lead and a small nickel addition that raises strength and improves the structure, so castability and pressure tightness are good, the alloy offers useful resistance to flowing seawater and costs relatively little; the maximum service temperature is about 225 °C. Strength is modest and hardness and wear resistance are limited, properties fall away at high temperature, and corrosion resistance is below that of aluminium bronze and high-nickel cupronickel. Use it for low- to medium-pressure corrosion-resistant parts at moderate temperature; control zinc and lead segregation and burn-off during casting, avoid high-velocity impingement or high-temperature high-pressure duty, and check lead restrictions. Avoid long holding times at high temperature. It is a reasonable choice where the medium is mildly corrosive and the pressure and temperature are moderate, and the low cost helps where large numbers of fittings are needed.
