Grade Overview

ZCuSn6Zn6Pb3 is a general-purpose cast tin bronze with about 6% tin, 6% zinc and 3% lead. Zinc improves fluidity and pressure tightness, while lead provides lubrication and machinability. Sand castings reach at least 180 MPa tensile strength, 8% elongation and 60 HBW. It is a workhorse grade for pump and valve bodies, gears and worm wheels where moderate strength and good casting quality matter.

Selecting ZCuSn6Zn6Pb3

Choose ZCuSn6Zn6Pb3 for medium-duty bushings, bearing shells, gears and pump or valve bodies that need pressure tightness and easy machining. Where higher strength and wear resistance are required, ZCuSn10P1 or ZCuSn10Zn2 is stronger; where the duty is heavier and slower, a high-lead bronze gives better embedding and seizure resistance.

Working with ZCuSn6Zn6Pb3

The grade casts well in sand and permanent moulds and is tolerant of ordinary gating practice. Lead segregates if the melt is overheated, so keep pouring temperature under control and stir before casting. Machining is good; no heat treatment is needed. Use it where a pressure-tight, reasonably strong bronze is required without the cost of a high-tin grade.

Frequently asked questions about ZCuSn6Zn6Pb3

What does 6-6-3 mean?

About 6% tin, 6% zinc and 3% lead, with copper as the balance — the traditional shorthand for this grade.

Is ZCuSn6Zn6Pb3 suitable for potable water?

Lead-bearing bronzes are restricted in potable-water service in many markets. Check the applicable rule before specifying it for drinking-water fittings.

How does it compare with ZCuSn5Pb5Zn5?

They are close in duty: ZCuSn6Zn6Pb3 has slightly more tin and zinc, ZCuSn5Pb5Zn5 slightly more lead. Both are general casting grades; choose by the certificate and the casting process available.
