Grade Overview
An economical aluminium-manganese cast bronze for bushings, gears, worm wheels, pipe fittings and pump casings. Aluminium strengthens the alloy while manganese raises strength and improves casting behaviour, giving a dense structure and good pressure tightness together with useful resistance to seawater and atmospheric corrosion; sand-cast tensile strength is at least 390 MPa and both ductility and fabricability are good. Because it contains neither nickel nor iron it stays relatively cheap. Strength is only moderate and hardness and wear resistance fall short of the iron- and nickel-bearing aluminium bronzes. Use it for fairly simple shapes that must resist corrosion under pressure; watch aluminium burn-off and oxide inclusions during melting, and allow for good fluidity combined with fairly high shrinkage by planning feeding and pouring temperature carefully. Where higher strength or more wear margin is needed, move to an Fe/Ni aluminium bronze. Its good fluidity and pressure tightness suit it to pump and valve housings, and it resists fresh water and seawater well enough for general industrial service.
