Grade Overview
ZCuZn40Mn3Fe1 is a manganese brass with 53.0-58.0% copper, 3.0-4.0% manganese, 0.5-1.5% iron and zinc as the balance; formerly designated ZHMn55-3-1. Manganese and iron raise strength and wear resistance, and the alloy resists seawater corrosion. Sand castings reach at least 440 MPa and permanent-mould castings at least 490 MPa, with elongation of 15-18% and hardness around 100-110 HBW.
Selecting ZCuZn40Mn3Fe1
Choose ZCuZn40Mn3Fe1 for seawater-resistant parts, worm wheels and gears, copper bushings and liners, pump bodies and heavy-machinery wear parts. It is stronger and more wear-resistant than ZCuZn40Mn2, at some cost in ductility. Where maximum corrosion resistance is needed, an aluminium bronze or a silicon brass is preferable; where cost dominates, ZCuZn40Mn2 is adequate.
Working with ZCuZn40Mn3Fe1
Control manganese and iron additions and keep the melt clean; iron-rich phases can settle if the melt is held too long. The alloy casts well in sand and permanent moulds and machines satisfactorily. No heat treatment is used. Pressure-test castings intended for pump or valve service.
Frequently asked questions about ZCuZn40Mn3Fe1
What was the old designation?
ZHMn55-3-1, the previous Chinese designation.
Is it a bearing alloy?
It is used for bushings and worm wheels, but it is a manganese brass rather than a dedicated bearing bronze. For higher load capacity, choose a tin or aluminium bronze.
Is it seawater resistant?
It has good resistance to seawater and is used for marine hardware, though aluminium bronzes are better for severe service.
