Grade Overview

ZCuZn35Al2Mn2Fe1 is a complex aluminium brass with 58.0-63.0% copper, 1.5-3.0% aluminium, 1.0-3.0% manganese, 0.5-2.0% iron and zinc as the balance; formerly designated ZHAl59-1-1. The combined additions give a fine-grained structure, tensile strength of at least 450 MPa in sand castings and excellent resistance to seawater and fresh water. It is a standard choice for marine fittings, pump and valve castings and medium-load bushings.

Selecting ZCuZn35Al2Mn2Fe1

Choose ZCuZn35Al2Mn2Fe1 for seawater and fresh-water pipe fittings, pump and valve bodies, marine hardware and general machinery structures. It offers a good balance of strength, corrosion resistance and castability at lower cost than a nickel-aluminium bronze. For higher strength and wear resistance, ZCuZn40Mn3Fe1 or an aluminium bronze is stronger; for water corrosion resistance with lower strength, ZCuZn16Si4 is adequate.

Working with ZCuZn35Al2Mn2Fe1

Melt under a clean cover and control aluminium and iron additions, which strongly affect structure and properties. The alloy casts well in sand and permanent moulds; avoid excessive superheat to limit zinc loss. Machining is good, and no heat treatment is required. Pressure-test critical castings before final machining.

Frequently asked questions about ZCuZn35Al2Mn2Fe1

What was the old designation?

ZHAl59-1-1, the previous Chinese designation for this 35-2-2-1 aluminium brass.

Is it suitable for seawater?

Yes. The aluminium, manganese and iron additions give good resistance to seawater and make it a common marine fitting alloy.

Does it contain lead?

No lead is specified in this grade, which makes it suitable where lead-free construction is required.
