Grade Overview
A widely used cast manganese brass for sleeves, bushings, bearing shells, slide blocks and valve-stem nuts, in other words general structural and wear parts rather than heavy bearings. Manganese strengthens the alloy in solid solution and improves corrosion resistance, while lead improves machinability, so mechanical properties are respectable, machining is easy and casting behaviour is good: sand-cast tensile strength at least 245 MPa, elongation at least 10% and hardness about 80 HBW in chill castings. Neither strength nor corrosion resistance matches the aluminium bronzes, and dezincification and stress-corrosion cracking are the recognised risks. Specify it for cost-sensitive structural parts and wear blocks under moderate load; avoid long-term tensile stress in chloride-bearing or damp environments, stress-relieve where necessary, and check lead content against the relevant compliance requirements. Machining is a particular strength thanks to the lead addition, and the casting suits continuous production of sleeves and nuts; where corrosion resistance decides the choice, however, an aluminium bronze will serve longer.
