Typical Applications
Grade Overview
A spinodal-hardening cast copper alloy of the Cu-15Ni-8Sn family, beryllium-free and non-magnetic, used for bearings, bushes and bushings, chemical and refinery equipment parts, seawater pump bodies, impellers, valves, flanges and propeller sleeves, steam piping and fittings, and general wear parts. After solution treatment and ageing, strength and hardness approach those of beryllium copper - tensile strength of at least 758 MPa, yield strength of at least 724 MPa and hardness around HRC 32 - with outstanding anti-friction and anti-seizure behaviour, good wear and seawater/chloride corrosion resistance, resistance to stress-corrosion cracking and good machinability; it is the beryllium-free alternative to beryllium copper. The cost is low ductility, with elongation of only about 4%, so it is sensitive to notches and shock, and melting and heat treatment demand close control at a price higher than ordinary cast copper alloys. Watch notch sensitivity in design and control solution and ageing treatment tightly. Its combination of high strength, wear resistance and seawater corrosion resistance is unusual in a cast copper alloy, which is why it is chosen for demanding bearings and seawater hardware.
