Grade Overview
ZCuZn40Mn2 is a manganese brass with 57.0-60.0% copper, 1.0-2.0% manganese and zinc as the balance. Manganese refines the cast structure and raises strength and wear resistance while preserving good castability and machinability. Sand and permanent-mould castings reach at least 345 MPa tensile strength and 20% elongation.
Selecting ZCuZn40Mn2
Choose ZCuZn40Mn2 for general structural castings, bearing shells, slide blocks, worm wheels and pump casings where a lower-cost brass is adequate. Where corrosion resistance in water or seawater is important, ZCuZn16Si4 or ZCuZn35Al2Mn2Fe1 is better; where higher strength is needed, the aluminium brasses carry more load.
Working with ZCuZn40Mn2
Melt clean and avoid excessive superheat to limit zinc loss. The alloy casts readily in sand and permanent moulds and machines well. It is not heat-treatable; strength comes from the as-cast structure. Where pressure tightness is required, test before finish machining.
