Grade Overview
T2 is the Chinese designation for electrolytic tough pitch copper with at least 99.90% Cu (Cu+Ag) and no more than 0.10% total impurities, corresponding to UNS C11000. It has the highest electrical and thermal conductivity of the common wrought coppers — at least 56 MS/m (about 97-101 %IACS) and 388 W/(m·K) — with excellent cold formability, solderability and brazing behaviour. It is supplied as plate, sheet, bar, busbar and rod.
Selecting T2
Choose T2 where current carrying or heat removal is the design driver: electrode clamps, conductive blocks, busbars and copper plates. It is not a wear or structural grade; where strength or wear resistance is needed, a brass or bronze such as H62 or QAl10-4-4 is the better choice.
Working with T2
T2 is soft and galls easily, so machining calls for sharp, high-rake tooling and good lubrication. It work-hardens only mildly and can be annealed for further forming. Welding is straightforward, but the tough pitch grade is embrittled by hydrogen at high temperature, so brazing and annealing atmospheres must be controlled. Keep the surface clean before electrical assembly.
Frequently asked questions about T2
Is T2 the same as C11000?
Yes in practice: T2 is the GB/T 5231 designation for ETP copper with ≥99.90% Cu, and C11000 is its UNS equivalent.
Why does T2 have no strength figures?
T2 is specified primarily for conductivity and purity. Mechanical properties depend on temper (annealed, half-hard, hard) and are agreed at ordering rather than fixed by the grade.
Can T2 be used for bushings?
No. It is too soft and has poor bearing properties; use a tin bronze or brass for sliding contact.
