Grade Overview

One of the most general-purpose wrought brasses, with about 62% copper, widely used for tube, rod, strip, hardware and machine parts. Strength, ductility, workability and corrosion resistance are well balanced and the price is low; hot and cold working and welding are all good, and soft-temper tensile strength is at least 300 MPa with a density of about 8.43 g/cm³. Dezincification and stress-corrosion cracking are its principal weaknesses: under sustained tensile stress in chloride-bearing or damp conditions it can crack, and deep-drawn parts may tear. Use it for general-purpose tube, rod, sheet, strip and hardware. Stress-relieve deep-drawn or cold-worked parts, and avoid long-term tensile stress in ammonia-bearing and seawater environments. It is easy to join by soldering, brazing and welding and is supplied in many tempers, from soft for forming to hard for strength. Because properties depend on the temper, the required condition should be specified with the drawing, and formed parts should be annealed or stress-relieved before going into corrosive service.
