Grade Overview

QAl10-5-5 is a wrought nickel-iron-aluminium bronze with about 10% aluminium, 5% iron and 5% nickel, corresponding to UNS C63000. In the quenched and tempered condition it reaches at least 635 MPa tensile strength, 275 MPa yield strength and 12% elongation, with hardness around 170-220 HBW. It combines high strength with resistance to corrosion, cavitation and erosion, and is used for heavy-duty worm wheels, large gear rims, high-pressure valve parts and marine shaft components.

Selecting QAl10-5-5

Choose QAl10-5-5 where high strength and corrosion resistance are required together: heavy worm wheels, large gear rims, high-pressure valve bodies and seats, marine shaft bushings and rudder parts, and rolling-mill screw-down nuts. It is more expensive and harder to machine than a tin bronze; where loads are moderate, QAl10-4-4 or QAl9-4 is sufficient.

Working with QAl10-5-5

The alloy is supplied in the quenched and tempered condition and is heat-treated after rough machining when properties are critical. It work-hardens and is abrasive to tooling, so use rigid setups, sharp carbide tooling and generous coolant. Welding is possible with matching filler but requires preheat and a controlled procedure. Avoid overheating during grinding, which can temper the surface.

Frequently asked questions about QAl10-5-5

Is QAl10-5-5 the same as C63000?

It is the Chinese wrought designation closest to UNS C63000 (AMS 4640 family). Check the standard and temper on the certificate.

Why is nickel added?

Nickel refines the microstructure and improves strength, toughness and corrosion resistance, especially in seawater.

Can it be cast instead of wrought?

Cast versions of similar composition exist, but QAl10-5-5 itself is a wrought grade. For castings, specify a cast aluminium bronze such as ZCuAl10Fe3.
