Grade Overview
A ternary copper-nickel-zinc alloy, commonly called nickel silver or German silver, silver-white in colour and used for instrument parts, elastic elements, telecommunication parts, jewellery and corrosion-resistant parts. Nickel and zinc give good corrosion resistance and excellent elasticity along with good hot and cold formability; tensile strength is at least 440 MPa and the elastic modulus at least 115 GPa. It cannot be strengthened by heat treatment, so strength comes from cold work. Weldability and machinability are relatively poor, work hardening is rapid, and deep forming requires intermediate annealing. Its elasticity is better than that of phosphor bronze, which makes it suitable where elasticity and corrosion resistance are needed together. Choose it with the amount of forming in mind, schedule interstage annealing accordingly, and be aware of its stress-corrosion tendency in ammonia or sulphide-bearing environments. The alloy is usually supplied cold rolled and is widely used where a spring must also resist tarnish and look well, but its poorer machinability means most parts are formed rather than cut.
