Grade Overview
A wrought iron-bearing cupronickel, known as B30, with about 30% nickel, used for condensers, thermostats, seawater heat exchangers and high-pressure pipe fittings. The higher nickel content makes seawater resistance, tolerance of high temperature and pressure and impingement-corrosion resistance all stronger than B10, with higher strength and toughness - bar tensile strength is at least 490 MPa - and a longer life in demanding seawater service. The trade-offs are slightly lower thermal conductivity, a higher price and poorer machinability, together with a pronounced tendency to work harden. Specify it for heat-exchange and piping systems at high temperature and pressure or in severe corrosion conditions; plan intermediate annealing during processing, control heat input when welding, and account for the effects of conductivity and thermal expansion in the design. The combination of strength and seawater resistance suits thin-wall tubing and fittings that must hold pressure, and allowance should be made for its lower thermal conductivity when heat transfer surfaces are sized.
