Grade Overview

A wrought iron-bearing cupronickel, known as B10, with about 10% nickel, used for condenser tubes, heat-exchanger tubes, seawater piping and marine pipe fittings. Nickel raises resistance to flowing seawater and impingement corrosion, iron improves corrosion resistance and manganese optimises processing behaviour; thermal conductivity is about 40 W/(m·K), weldability is good, and tensile strength is at least 295 MPa with elongation of at least 25%. It is the mainstay material for condensers and heat-exchanger tubing. Strength and hardness are only moderate, and resistance to ammonia attack is below that of higher-nickel grades. It is widely used in ships, thermal power plant and seawater desalination equipment; avoid high-velocity sand-bearing water in service, and watch for ammonia and sulphide attack in the medium. Tube is normally supplied annealed for bending and expanding, and the alloy tolerates the moderate flow velocities of condensers and heat exchangers; where the water is unusually aggressive or the temperature higher, the 30% nickel grade is the safer choice.
