Grade Overview
A lead-based Babbitt that adds copper and cadmium to ZPbSb15Sn5, used for petrol-engine bearings, compressor bearings, ball-mill bearings and mine pump bearings. Copper and cadmium raise hardness so that performance approaches that of ZPbSb16Sn16Cu2, with hardness about 32 HBW, and it is a good substitute for that grade. Ductility and toughness are somewhat reduced, and cadmium adds environmental and occupational-health concerns. Use it for bearings poured to carry low to medium loads; check cadmium compliance and protection requirements when selecting it, and control segregation and cooling rate during pouring to ensure a uniform structure and sound bonding to the steel backing. Castings should not serve at high temperature for long periods, and cadmium protection and waste disposal must be part of the management plan. It can be considered where a harder lead-based grade would be preferred but availability or cost points elsewhere, and the same care with alignment, clearance and oil supply applies; the lining should be kept thin enough to shed heat.
