Grade Overview
A lead-based Babbitt with medium antimony and tin content, used for medium-speed bearings, bearings subject to moderate shock and high-temperature bearings. Compared with ZPbSb16Sn16Cu2 it offers better impact toughness and ductility and good running-in behaviour, and after annealing its anti-friction performance and toughness improve further; hardness is about 24 HBW, but the coefficient of friction is relatively high. Load capacity is intermediate, so it is not suited to heavy, high-speed duty without adequate lubrication. Choose it for medium-speed, moderate-load bearings that may see some shock; ensure good oil supply and running-in, respect the temperature limit, control structural uniformity when pouring, and observe the compliance requirements for lead. Stir thoroughly before pouring to avoid segregation from the density difference. Because it runs in more easily than the harder lead-based grades, it is a practical choice for bearings that cannot be run in under controlled conditions, and an annealing treatment before service can improve both toughness and anti-friction behaviour.
