Grade Overview
The most widely used wrought phosphor bronze, applied in springs, elastic elements, contact strips, wear parts and non-magnetic components. Phosphorus raises the elastic limit and improves wear resistance, so strength, elasticity, wear resistance and non-magnetic behaviour are well balanced, and both hot and cold working and welding are easy. Soft temper gives tensile strength of at least 370 MPa with elongation above 30%, while cold working raises strength above 540 MPa. The benefit of cold work comes with a sharp loss of elongation in the hard temper, so forming must be done in stages. Specify it for springs, spring contacts, wear parts and non-magnetic parts; form deep-drawn or bent parts in the soft temper and then adjust properties by cold work or low-temperature annealing, and avoid long-term service in ammonia-bearing environments. Because the material cannot be strengthened by heat treatment, the required strength and elasticity must be built in through the amount of cold reduction, so the temper of the strip or wire should be specified together with the forming sequence.
