Grade Overview
A wrought tin-zinc bronze used for springs, elastic elements, corrosion-resistant parts, non-magnetic parts and bushings. The zinc addition improves casting and pressure-working behaviour; the alloy has fairly high wear resistance and elasticity, is non-magnetic, resists atmospheric and seawater corrosion, and both hot and cold working are easy, with a liquidus of about 1046 °C. It cannot be strengthened by heat treatment, so strength comes mainly from cold work and the soft temper is only of medium strength; properties therefore depend on the amount of reduction applied. Specify it for springs, corrosion-resistant parts and non-magnetic components; arrange the amount of cold work in the direction of loading, avoid long service at high temperature that would cause stress relaxation, and remember the stress-corrosion risk of zinc-bearing alloys in ammonia environments. Because the alloy is zinc-bearing, parts that are cold formed and then stressed should be stress-relieved, and service temperatures kept low enough to avoid relaxation of the spring properties.
