Grade Overview

ZZnAl4-1 is the Chinese designation for the ZAMAK 3 type die-casting zinc alloy, corresponding to UNS Z35531. With about 4% aluminium, 0.025-0.06% magnesium and tightly controlled impurities, it gives an excellent balance of castability, dimensional stability, strength and surface finish. Die castings reach at least 268 MPa tensile strength, 6% elongation and about 82 HBW, at a density of 6.6 g/cm³.

Selecting ZZnAl4-1

Choose ZZnAl4-1 for die-cast structural parts, locks and handles, electrical and appliance housings, automotive small parts, sanitary fittings and decorative components. It is the most widely used zinc die-casting alloy. Where higher strength and wear resistance are needed, ZA303 or ZZnAl27Cu2Mg is better; where thin walls and fine detail dominate, ZZnAl4-1 remains the practical choice.

Working with ZZnAl4-1

The alloy is designed for hot-chamber die casting. Control melt temperature and keep aluminium and magnesium within the specified range; iron and lead impurities must be kept low to avoid embrittlement and poor dimensional stability. Castings can be machined, polished and plated. Avoid prolonged high-temperature service, where zinc alloys creep.

Frequently asked questions about ZZnAl4-1

Is ZZnAl4-1 the same as ZAMAK 3?

Yes. It is the GB/T 13818 designation for the ZAMAK 3 composition, UNS Z35531.

Can it be used for bearings?

No. It is a general die-casting alloy; for bearing duty use ZA303 or a copper-based bearing alloy.

Why is magnesium controlled so tightly?

Magnesium controls grain size and dimensional stability. Too little causes instability, too much causes casting difficulty and brittleness.
