Grade Overview

A lead-based Babbitt with lower tin content, used for low-speed light-load bearings and general machinery bearings. Hardness is about 20 HBW and density about 10.1 g/cm³; ductility and thermal conductivity are relatively poor and performance suffers under high temperature, high pressure or shock, but within 100 °C and with steady loading the behaviour is stable and service life is decent, which makes it a low-cost bearing material. Load capacity is limited and the low thermal conductivity hinders heat removal, so it warms up easily. Confine it to low-speed, light-load duties with steady load; control specific pressure and speed in the design, ensure lubrication and heat dissipation, avoid high-temperature or shock conditions, and observe the compliance limits on leaded material. Its low cost is the main attraction, and it is often found in older or lightly loaded machinery where a replacement lining is needed quickly. Because the alloy is soft and conducts heat poorly, adequate clearance and a reliable oil supply do more for life than any change in composition.
