Grade Overview
A lead-based Babbitt with lower antimony, used for automotive engine main bearings, air-compressor bearings and oil-pump bearings. Hardness is about 18 HBW and load capacity is towards the lower end, but ductility, running-in behaviour and cost are all favourable and it can substitute for tin-based ZSnSb4Cu4, with a maximum service temperature of about 120 °C. Both strength and hardness are low, so it suits only medium loads or high-speed light loads, and its resistance to shock is limited. Specify it for bearings at up to 120 °C under medium load or high speed with low load; ensure generous oil supply and good running-in, control temperature and specific pressure, and observe lead-related environmental and occupational-health requirements. With steady load or high-speed light duty it is an economical alternative to tin-based alloy. It is a common original-equipment material for engine and compressor bearings where the load is steady, and it is also used for re-lining because it pours easily and works well against hardened shafts.
